Tonkatsu Set
$26Free-range pork loin, hand-crumbed in panko, fried light & golden. Served with yuzu cabbage, miso, rice, house tonkatsu sauce, wasabi & truffle salt.
A tiny counter on Queen Street serving the tonkatsu Melbourne queues for — golden, crisp, never oily — with wagyu sukiyaki nabe, udon and sake.
Katsuhon began with Charlie and the team travelling Japan, hunting down the country's best katsu spots one crisp, golden cutlet at a time. They came home determined to bring that exacting standard to Melbourne.
So we built something small on purpose — a counter, a few booths, a sheltered patio — where the focus stays on the little details you only find in Japan. Ingredients are sourced locally where we can, and every sauce and condiment is made from scratch, on site, every day.
"Quality over everything, in the smallest of rooms." — Charlie & the Katsuhon team
Pork loin, chicken, prawn or lamb pressed into fresh panko and fried light & golden — crisp shell, juicy centre, never oily.
Our tonkatsu sauce, dressings and broths are built in-house daily. No shortcuts, no bottles — just the real thing.
No bookings, no fuss. Grab a counter seat, order an Orion or a sake, and watch your katsu come together.
Marbled wagyu, simmered tableside in a sweet-savoury broth with tofu, mushrooms and greens. The dish our regulars call "worth every dollar."

"Tucked away and worth the hunt. No bookings, a small queue, and then the best katsu in the CBD. Go early."
Katsuhon is walk-in only — we do not take reservations. We are a small counter-and-booth space, so the best time to grab a seat is right as we open at midday or 5pm. There is usually a short, fast-moving queue at peak times.
You will find us in the lower shop at Shop 3, 200 Queen Street, Melbourne CBD 3000. We are tucked away on the lower level — look for the Katsuhon sign just off Queen Street.
Every katsu set is served with yuzu-dressed cabbage salad, miso soup, steamed rice, our house-made tonkatsu sauce, wasabi, Dijon mustard, toasted sesame and truffle salt — plus a small seasonal side.
Yes. Our vegan basil soba is a guest favourite, and we can guide you through other plant-friendly dishes on the day. Just ask the team at the counter.
We do — Orion beer on tap, a curated sake selection, and alcoholic and non-alcoholic highballs, alongside Japanese teas.
We are open Monday to Saturday, 12:00–3:00pm for lunch and 5:00–10:00pm for dinner. We are closed on Sundays.
No bookings — just turn up early, grab a seat at the counter, and let us do the rest.
